Protist Taxonomy

Why aren’t the protists a true taxonomic group?

Protists make up a group that is paraphyletic, meaning that they do not make up all of the descendants of their most recent common ancestor. This is because plants, animals and fungi share this lineage, but are not considered to be protists. A true taxonomic group is considered monophyletic, and contains all descendants from one ancestor.
