What kinds of growth occur in plants?
Plants can display two different types of growth:
- Primary growth, also known as apical-basal growth, is the enlongation of the root or stem of the plant. This is how their stems become taller and their roots become longer. Also included in this growth, is the development of leaves. It occurs in every plant type, and originates from the apical meristem tissues.
- Secondary growth, or radial growth, occurs when the stem and root systems of a plant increase in diameter. Lateral meristem regulates the development of tissues to widen the plant’s stem or root. This growth primarily happens only in dicots.
